One of the hardest things to accomplish with your new digital camera will be digital action sports photography as many cameras have a short delay from the time the shutter is pressed until the picture is snapped. This can lead to pictures of the action exiting the frame, or missing altogether, and trying to anticipate the subject’s position when the picture is taken can lead to them being out of focus.

Those experienced in action sports pictures know how difficult it is to stay with the subject while focusing the pictures, making sure the depth of field is correct as well as lighting and the other aspects of capturing a good quality picture. Some people have trouble taking quality still pictures and will not even try digital action sports photography. However, with a little practice and the right equipment it is possible to get good results.

The first digital cameras to hit the market did nothing to help digital action sports photography as they had a delay built in that required the camera to make too many automatic adjustments before it captured the image. This delay, although only a fraction of a second, could put the subject outside the image area. Often the shutter was only partially pressed, setting the camera to shoot and then the subject was framed and shot. This often allowed the subject to move outside the depth of field resulting in a picture that was out of focus.

Technology Allows For Rapid Recycling

When people are shooting digital action sports photography, they count on being able to record several pictures in sequence, but not so fast as to be considered a movie. Three to five frames per second is usually about the fastest professionals will shoot, and that gives those involved with digital action sports photography the selection they need for each action sequence. It also reduces their cost and time from using traditional film cameras.

Since most action photography produces one excellent picture for about each 30 shots taken, digital action sports photography is a great savings to photographers who no longer have to pay to process unused film or look at hundreds of unused prints. Many will still print sheets of the all the pictures they shot from an event, but will be able to see the pictures better on a computer screen as opposed to looking at them on contact sheets through a magnifying glass.
