The Fascinating World Of Wildlife Photography

Wildlife photographers are responsible for taking us right up close to the humble housefly, making us smile at the antics of killer bears, and marvel at the closeness of a family of meerkats.

Quite often, the best results of wildlife photography are generated through luck and persistence. Last year¡¯s winner of a well known British photography competition took hundreds of photos over a span of several hours before taking the one shot that won the competition.

You will certainly need a lot of patience if you want to take good wildlife photos. A love of nature is also useful as you will want to find out more about the habits and habitats of animals, birds and wildlife in general.

Gaining Experience In Wildlife Photography

As with any kind of photography, practice is the key to getting better photos more often. The best place to start is in your own neighborhood. What animals are you likely to see most often?

Find out the habits of these animals to improve your chances of taking successful photos. Wildlife photography is all about fitting in with your subjects as much as possible. After all, animals aren¡¯t as obliging as humans, and they certainly won¡¯t sit and pose for extended periods of time when it suits you.

Setting Up

Wildlife photography demands that you have to be still for extended periods of time, with minimal movement to avoid scaring off your subject. It¡¯s essential that you make sure you are going to be comfortable and protected from the weather if it turns bad.

If you are intending on being outside for a long period of time ¨C anything more than two or three hours for example ¨C take some provisions with you and make sure you wear waterproof clothing if it looks like it might rain.

Making The Most Of Opportunities

Sometimes with wildlife photography you need to be adaptable. You might be waiting for hours to photograph a fox going about its daily business, only to be confronted by another animal entirely, for example.

This is both an advantage and a disadvantage of wildlife photography. You don¡¯t always manage to get the photos you are aiming for ¨C but you can sometimes get something completely unexpected and occasionally far better.

You may never end up photographing lions in the wild for National Geographic Magazine, but there are just as many intriguing and eye opening photos to be taken in your local area ¨C including your back garden.

It¡¯s up to you to take them.
