Is Commercial Photography For You?
You are enjoying photography as a hobby and all of a sudden you realize that you could a make a great living out of this pastime. How do you make the transit from the hobby level to the commercial photography level?
Crossing the Line Smoothly
It is great when you decide to make your hobby your career. This is because any work that you love is not actually work for you; hence, you will end up earning money for something that you enjoy. This would be exactly like someone paying you for taking a holiday and having a great time.
Establishing Yourself as a Commercial Photography Expert
Confidence – You should first and foremost be exceptionally confident in your ability to deliver what is needed. You would need not only to take good shots of the subject required, but also finish your shooting within the given deadlines despite good or bad lighting, despite lack of time, despite bad weather. In other words, commercial photography means confidence to deliver on time and with quality.
Landing Projects - Commercial photography means you will need to generate work for yourself. Initially, for a few years you will need to be a good marketing director for yourself as well as a good photographer. You will need to divide your time between these two aspects; with enough time and experience, the promotional aspects will come easy.
Self-Promotion – There is no successful commercial photography business without effective self-promotion. You will need to broadcast your availability and expertise literally from the rooftops. Only then you will be able to build your network, and subsequently guarantee a continuous flow of work.
Price Yourself Right – Your services cost should take into consideration two main criteria: Your experience, and the quality of the picture you can guarantee. If both these aspects are optimal, then your commercial photography career will be just great. The price should always be slightly below that of the market when you are novice and just slightly above the line when you consider yourself to be an experienced commercial photographer.
Delivery Schedule - Commercial photography, just as with any job on this earth, will always demand and reward punctuality. It will be extremely important that people understand that you mean business when you accept a contract. Hence, when you say that the delivery will be done in 24 hours, then it should not take more than 24 hours.
