The Critical Elements of Fashion Photography

Just about everyone has flipped through a fashion magazine marveling at the many examples of fashion photography.  If you’re considering becoming a fashion photographer, remember that it is a very competitive business.  Every year hundreds of fresh-faced photographers leave their schools ready to take on the fashion world.  If you want to land that first job, it’s important to know a few essential elements of fashion photography.

Composition

Despite the impression that the photograph may give you when you see it in a magazine, most pictures within the realm of fashion photography are very structured and composed.  Each tilt of the model’s head, the flowers falling to the ground, even that portion of the skirt being whisked out behind the model was carefully planned out by the photographer.  Fashion photography is about taking a moment in time and using it to sell a product.  By planning the composition of the shot whatever you’re selling becomes that much more appealing.

Color and Movement

Color, or the absence of it, can be one of the most important factors when dealing with fashion photography.  In almost every fashion photograph that you see today, there is something that draws you in, and often the element most often used is color.  Another characteristic of most good fashion photography is the picture gives the illusion of movement.  A black and white picture of a girl standing on a bridge doesn’t always get as much attention as a full color one where the subject is wearing a red raincoat running down the bridge to catch her train.

Fun and Playful

Another factor in many examples of fashion photography that one sees is how fun and playful they are.  If both the model and the photographer are having a great time, it shows through the photograph.  Because of this, potential buyers of the fashion product will associate the product with good times and friends.  So be sure to keep your fashion photography session light and playful.  A good time will be had by all, and the smile you photograph will be truly genuine.

The next time you see a prime example of fashion photography in the magazine, stop and think of what elements you see in the picture.  Chances are you’ll begin to see one or perhaps all of these elements in the photograph.  Once you start to do that, and start to utilize these ideas in your own work, you’ll be well on your way to being a great fashion photographer.
